Understanding Seizures: Causes, Symptoms & Diagnosis in Uganda
Seizures are sudden, uncontrolled electrical disturbances in the brain. They can affect behavior, movements, feelings, and levels of consciousness. In Uganda, many people live with seizures without proper diagnosis due to limited awareness and access to brain health services.
At Kampala EEG Lab, we aim to provide expert seizure diagnosis using EEG brain scans and comprehensive neurological evaluations.

What Exactly Causes a Seizure?
Seizures can be caused by several factors, including:
- Epilepsy (the most common cause)
- Brain injury or trauma
- High fever (especially in children)
- Infections like meningitis
- Stroke or brain tumors
- Drug or alcohol withdrawal
- Genetic conditions
How Do Seizures Usually Start?
Seizures often begin with:
- Sudden staring or unresponsiveness
- Jerking movements in arms or legs
- Muscle stiffness
- Loss of awareness or confusion
- Unusual sensations (smells, sounds, or visions)
Each type of seizure has unique signs. Getting an EEG scan helps determine the type and origin.
Can Seizures Be Cured?
Seizures caused by a one-time issue (like high fever) may stop after treatment. However, epilepsy is a long-term condition. With proper diagnosis, medication, lifestyle changes, and brain scans, many people in Uganda live full lives with well-controlled seizures.
